Kokua
Agency/Program Overview
Kokua provides residential support services to 54 individuals living in Thurston County. The individuals we serve have a range of disabilities; cerebral palsy, autism, brain injury and various developmental syndromes. Kokua's primary source of funding is a residential services contract with the DSHS Division of Developmental Disabilities.
Kokua has a commitment to providing a range of activities that enhance the quality of life for the individuals we serve. In addition to providing residential support services, Kokua sponsors MELE (Music Enriched Learning Experience) a weekly music program. MELE provides participants with access to a range of musical instruments, including adaptive equipment for participants with physical disabilities. Kokua also has a Communication Program to help individuals with communication barriers improve their ability to communicate effectively. Thanks to donations and gifts from private foundations, Kokua has been able to purchase a range of communication devices that address a variety of learning needs.
Specific Research Question
Conduct a needs assessment and feasibility study of providing certain specialized services for people with disabilities.
The desired outcome of the project is to have the necessary data to complete a business plan for expansion of agency services to cover the identified unmet needs.
Key Steps
- Meet with local stakeholders in the Thurston County disability community to collect information for designing a needs assessment.
- Design and administer a Needs Assessment.
- Analyze the assessment data and prepare a written report of the findings.
- Contact other local nonprofits in Washington and beyond that serve as regional centers for similar specialized services.
- Research their funding and reimbursement models.
- Provide Kokua with a written summary.
Additional Research Resources
Kokua's Executive Director would contact stakeholders and arrange for public meetings.
Kokua would also supply the student with contact information for interviewing other agencies which provide specialized services on a regional level.
If you have additional questions or would like more information, please email Christine Rasmussen-Barsanti, Executive Director.
