Tim Scharks started the Evans School Ph.D. in Public Policy and Management program in 2008. His research interests include environmental policy, environmental risk communication, and geography education.
In addition to his doctoral studies at the Evans School, Scharks has served as a geography instructor for Green River Community College since 2005, and as the coordinator and president for the Washington Geographic Alliance since 2006. He is also the president-elect of the Association of Washington Geographers, serving previously as the association’s vice president from 2007-09.
Scharks decided to pursue a Ph.D. in order to develop his skills as a scholar and practitioner of applied research on environmental problems. He hopes to work as an academic, teaching and conducting research on environmental policy.
He said he chose the Evans School “because of the firm foundation it provides in economics, research methods, and quantitative analysis. Learning these skills will develop my ability to investigate difficult policy problems.”
Scharks is a 1992 National Merit Scholar and 2008 recipient of the Evans School of Public Affairs Graduate Fellowship.
Scharks holds a Master of Science in Geography from Western Washington University and a BS in geography from the University of Alaska, Fairbanks.
